A Blanket of Love

Picture yourself standing under a tree and looking up to see three birds perched on a limb. As you focus on the birds, you see a multicolored mother bird covering her fuzzy little baby birds with her wings. What a beautiful example of the sheltering protection of an Almighty God!

Baby birds need protection from predators and the elements. The ideal place to be is close to their mother’s breast concealed by her wings. Little nestlings experience the clutch of love when gathered under the wings of their mother.

The living illustration of a hen guarding her chicks represents the lavishing love of our Father God (1 John 3:1). His love includes protection and provision. His love covers our many sins. His love shields us from our enemies. His love grants us refuge under His wings.

Sounds good yet this is not a literal understanding of God hiding us under His wings. What does it mean for God to cover us with His feathers? How do we know we are covered by the love of a Savior?

When we’ve accepted Jesus Christ as our Savior, His blood covers our sins (Matthew 26:28). When we’ve accepted Jesus Christ as our Savior, His love wraps around us like a banner (Song of Songs 2:4). When we’ve accepted Jesus Christ as our Savior, His peace shields us in the midst of trials (Isaiah 26:3). When we’ve accepted Jesus Christ as our Savior, His faithfulness secures His promises to us (Psalm 33:4).

Scripture gives us the best picture of God spreading His wings to shelter us. As you read God's Word, picture yourself perched somewhere in your own place as He gives you refuge from the outside world. Know that His love covers your sins and His wings give you sanctuary from the storms of life.

How blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven,
Whose sin is covered!
  Psalm 32:1 (NASB)

The Lord repay you for what you have done, and a full reward be given you by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge!”  Ruth 2:12 (ESV)
This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.  2 Samuel 22:31 (ESV)
But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you.  Psalm 5:11 (ESV)
How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings.  Psalm 36:7 (ESV)
Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge; in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge, till the storms of destruction pass by.  Psalm 57:1 (ESV)
He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
    will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress,
    my God, in whom I trust.”
Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will cover you with his feathers,
    and under his wings you will find refuge;
    his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.
You will not fear the terror of night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
    nor the plague that destroys at midday.
A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
You will only observe with your eyes
    and see the punishment of the wicked.
If you make the Most High your dwelling—
    even the Lord, who is my refuge—
then no harm will befall you,
    no disaster will come near your tent.
For he will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you in all your ways;
they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
You will tread upon the lion and the cobra;
    you will trample the great lion and the serpent.
“Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
    I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
He will call upon me, and I will answer him;
    I will be with him in trouble,
    I will deliver him and honor him.
With long life will I satisfy him
    and show him my salvation.”
Psalm 91 (NIV)

Covered by His wings of love
God looks upon us from above.
Sheltering us from storm and gale
Hiding us within His veil.

Washed anew by the blood He shed,
New self alive, the old one dead.
When transgressors turn from sin
The shroud of forgiveness comes flooding in.

God’s blanket of love surrounds with peace,
His children who willingly release
The cares and trials of everyday life,
Granting serenity within the strife.

God is a refuge for those who believe.
The woes of fear He can relieve,
Covering us with His shield
His wings of protection are revealed.
