My Strong Tower

Have you ever played hide-and-seek? Picture a group of children gathered together outside to play the game. One is selected to be “it” and the others are to run and find a safe hideaway. After counting to a certain number, “it” seeks all the others that have hidden themselves.

Now imagine being the one who is hiding from the seeker. You are hurriedly running (maybe in all directions) looking for the perfect spot that will conceal you from the seeker. The anxiety you feel about getting caught generates a willingness to crawl under something, stand behind something, climb up something, or crawl down into something; anything will do as long as you are well hidden and out-of-sight.

Have you ever tried to run from your sin or pain, an enemy, evil, or the devil, a literal storm or one that is brewing within your family? Where did you run to— alcohol, drugs, sex or anything else that seemed comforting at the time? Because we live in a “microwave” society, we want our problems to be solved quickly. Our focus is so concentrated on our uncomfortable circumstances that we forget about the bigger picture and start seeking instant gratification.The Scriptures inform us to approach life differently.

Our God understands life and its many situations; after all, He’s the Creator and lived on earth as Jesus Christ. He gave us His Word to lead us into right living—think of the Bible as the travel guide for your daily walk with Christ. It’s the perfect instructional manuel for hiding and seeking.

So again I ask: where do you run and hide? When your personal pathway of life reveals nasty curves with ups and downs, what do you do, where do you go? God’s Word is explicit about where we are to run and hide, using fortified words like refuge, fortress, and strong tower. And who is that refuge, fortress, and strong tower? It is God Almighty, the Lord of heaven and earth.

Are you feeling weakened and exposed? Do you need security and support? Run to God’s Word, the Word, Jesus Christ (John 1:1-5). Hide in the shelter of His arms and He will strengthen you! Allow His words to fortify your will and make you strong. Be filled with His strength and stand firm on the Word of the Lord. Praise His holy name!

The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
The righteous run to it and are safe.
  Proverbs 18:10 (NKJV)

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”
  Psalm 91:2 (NKJV)

Hear my cry, O God;
Give heed to my prayer.

From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.

For You have been a refuge for me,
A tower of strength against the enemy.

Let me dwell in Your tent forever;
Let me take refuge in the shelter of Your wings.
Psalm 61:1-4 (NASB)

My lovingkindness and my fortress,
My high tower and my deliverer,
My shield and the One in whom I take refuge,
Who subdues my people under me.
  Psalm 144:2 (NKJV)

“The Lord lives!
Blessed be my Rock!
Let God be exalted,
The Rock of my salvation!
It is God who avenges me,
And subdues the peoples under me;
He delivers me from my enemies.
You also lift me up above those who rise against me;
You have delivered me from the violent man.
Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the Gentiles,
And sing praises to Your name.
“He is the tower of salvation to His king,
And shows mercy to His anointed,
To David and his descendants forevermore.”
  2 Samuel 22:47-51 (NKJV)

...stand firm in the Lord...  Phil. 4:1 (NASB)

Therefore he said to Judah, “Let us build these cities and make walls around them, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us, because we have sought the Lord our God; we have sought Him, and He has given us rest on every side.” So they built and prospered.  2 Chronicles 14:7 (NKJV)
I will love You, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
My God, my strength, in whom I will trust;
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised;
So shall I be saved from my enemies.
Psalm 18:1-3 (NKJV)

O Lord, how my adversaries have increased!
Many are rising up against me.
Many are saying of my soul,
“There is no deliverance for him in God.”
But You, O Lord, are a shield about me,
My glory, and the One who lifts my head.
I was crying to the Lord with my voice,
And He answered me from His holy mountain.
I lay down and slept;
I awoke, for the Lord sustains me.
I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people
Who have set themselves against me round about.
Arise, O Lord; save me, O my God!
For You have smitten all my enemies on the cheek;
You have shattered the teeth of the wicked.
Salvation belongs to the Lord;
Your blessing be upon Your people!
Psalm 3 (NASB)

But let all who take refuge in You be glad,
Let them ever sing for joy;
And may You shelter them,
That those who love Your name may exult in You.
For it is You who blesses the righteous man, O Lord,
You surround him with favor as with a shield.
Psalm 5:11-12 (NASB)
