The Power of God's Voice

Cedar chest: two words that ignite the senses. Aromatic, knotty, reddish brown, strong, and long-lasting: words that describe the beautiful fragrant box. Memories of my grandmother’s cedar chest flood my mind with visions of her most prized possessions stored inside.

In ancient times the most prized trees were the cedars of Lebanon. Because of the strong scented wood, these trees offered top trading value for the building of temples and palaces. The fine quality of the cedars of Lebanon symbolized strength and magnificence.

So what do the cedars of Lebanon have to do with God and His voice? These splendid trees are but the creation of the Creator. The cedar wood may be strong and magnificent, but God is the Creator. All through the ages, people have been impressed with the trees and their by-products. Have we been as inspired by the Creator of the cedars of Lebanon? Have we given Him the credit due His holy name?

The Lord reigns over all the earth. He spoke and the earth was created. The power and majesty of God’s voice thunders above all creation. Ascribe to the Creator the glory due His name with Psalm 29 below.

Ascribe to the Lord, you heavenly beings,
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
    worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
    the God of glory thunders,
    the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
    the voice of the Lord is majestic.
The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon leap like a calf
    Sirion like a young wild ox.
The voice of the Lord strikes
    with flashes of lightning.
The voice of the Lord shakes the desert;
    the Lord shakes the Desert of Kadesh.
The voice of the Lord twists the oaks
    and strips the forests bare.
And in his temple all cry, “Glory!”
The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
    the Lord is enthroned as King forever.
The Lord gives strength to his people;
    the Lord blesses his people with peace.

Our God is mighty! If His voice can break into pieces the cedars of Lebanon, what can it do for us? God’s voice created humans, Jesus spoke miracles into many lives, and the Holy Spirit will direct our paths everyday if we listen to His voice. Hear what Job’s friend Elihu said about God Almighty to Job in the midst of his distress.

Listen! Listen to the roar of his voice,
    to the rumbling that comes from his mouth.
He unleashes his lightning beneath the whole heaven
    and sends it to the ends of the earth.
After that comes the sound of his roar;
    he thunders with his majestic voice.
When his voice resounds,
    he holds nothing back.
God’s voice thunders in marvelous ways;
    he does great things beyond our understanding.
  Job 37:4-5 (NIV)

Like Job, have you suffered brokenness and heartache? Have you experienced distress in the situations of your life? Even so, remain with the Lord, listen to His voice, and hear His words. Scripture directs us to listen to Him, and just as Abraham was obedient to the voice of the Lord, we too must be obedient to His voice.

When you are in distress and all these things have come upon you, in the latter days you will return to the Lord your God and listen to His voice. Deuteronomy 4:30 (NASB)

Give ear and hear my voice,
Listen and hear my words.  Isaiah 28:23 (NASB)

God spoke to Abraham...and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”  Genesis 22:18 (NIV)
So ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name. Attribute to Him all majesty, power, and might. Worship the beauty of His holiness. Yes, in the midst of your pain and sorrow, grant to God all the honor He deserves, and He will see to your needs. The Lord who sits enthroned over all creation will give you strength and peace. Psalm 29:11 says so:
The Lord gives strength to his people;
    the Lord blesses his people with peace.

Now....To Him who rides upon the highest heavens, which are from ancient times; Behold, He speaks forth with His voice, a mighty voice. Psalm 68:33 (NASB)

Listen to the God of that mighty voice. Trust and obey Him. Receive His strength and peace. AMEN! Let it be so!
